Dare I say she looked better with the Imperial crown than she would have done with the Cap of Monomakh.

It's odd that she'd murder her husband and steal his kingdom, but draw the line at openly wearing his hat.

Yes, a curious Freudian fear, worthy of an existential play by Schnitzler or Wedekind.

Of course wearing the Cap of Monomakh would have been tantamount to saying "I am an usurper". Neither did she ever call herself tsarina.

She wore a made-up crown and called herself "Imperatritsa", a made-up title.

I suppose crowns & titles were all made up at one time or another. Unless you accept the King Arthur legend.
